Agnès est toute jeune mariée lorsque la guerre éclate en 1914. Son mari, Célestin, est envoyé au front et le jeune couple n’ayant pas encore d’enfant, elle reste seule à Lyon en attendant que cette soit-disant guerre éclair se termine.

Un soir qu’elle rentre de l’usine comme ouvrière tisseuse, Agnès découvre avec stupéfaction que la receveuse de son tram est une femme. La société des transports a en effet mis de côté la règle qui veut que les métiers des transports soient pourvus uniquement par des individus masculins puisque des hommes, il en manque !

Elle apprend également qu’un poste de receveuse est bien mieux payé que son poste d’ouvrière. Il ne lui en faut pas plus pour de tenter sa chance et postuler auprès de la Compagnie des tramways et omnibus.

 » A l’usine, elle touche à peine trois francs par jour en trimant toute la journée sur des machines bruyantes ! Avec davantage d’argent, elle pourrait faire tant de choses … D’abord, envoyer plus souvent des colis de nourriture à Célestin. Ensuite, changer le vieux poêle à charbon. Et pour finir, s’offrir cette belle robe violine qu’elle a repérée dans la vitrine d’une boutique de prêt-à-porter. Elle la mettrait pour accueillir son mari à la gare, le jour où il reviendrait de la gare… « 

Hélas, tous les postes de contrôleuse sont déjà pourvus. Mais Agnès se voit proposer un poste de wattwoman – conductrice de tram !
Après une période d’écolage, la voilà seule à bord pour conduire le tram. Certains passants et passagers la regardent de travers, d’autres n’hésitent pas à faire leurs remarques à voix haute mais tous les commentaires ne sont pas négatifs. La sœur d’Agnès et sa jeune nièce sont très fières d’elles et viennent même lui rendre visite pour la voir conduire le tram de leurs propres yeux !

Agnès aime très vite son nouvel emploi. Non seulement elle est mieux rémunérée mais il lui apporte davantage de satisfaction que sa précédente place d’ouvrière.
Mais à la fin de la guerre, une fois les hommes revenus, Agnès est congédiée, comme toutes les autres. Elle est furieuse, d’une part parce qu’elle espérait que la société avait amorcé un tournant, de l’autre parce que son mari, lui, est bien content. Célestin n’avait jamais accepté qu’elle gagne plus que lui ni qu’elle occupe un « emploi d’homme ». Il se refuse également à prendre en compte l’épanouissement de sa femme. Pour lui, elle peut déjà s’estimer bien heureuse de travailler à l’usine alors qu’elle ferait mieux de soigner son foyer !

Lorsqu’elle rejoint un groupe de suffragettes, c’en est trop ! Réclamer le droit de vote ! Manifester ! N’a-t-elle pas honte de consacrer son temps à ces foutaises alors que le pays sort à peine de la guerre ?

 » – Et moi, tu crois que je ne l’ai pas subie et que je n’en paie pas les conséquences, comme toutes les femmes de ce pays ? Nous exigeons d’avoir les mêmes droits que les hommes, c’est la moindre des reconnaissances, au vu de ce que nous avons accompli à l’arrière pendant quatre ans !

– Vous n’êtes qu’une poignée à vous agiter , comment peux-tu parler au nom de toutes les femmes ? soupire Célestin. Pourquoi tu ne peux pas te comporter comme les autres ? Comme une femme normale !

– C’est quoi, au juste, une femme normale ? Une boniche sans cervelle, une esclave que tu sonnes quand tu as besoin d’elle ?

Mon avis

« Celle qui voulait conduire le tram » de Catherine Cuenca est un court roman de 150 pages qui ne manque pas d’intensité. J’ai aimé découvrir comment son héroïne de fiction devient féministe, elle qui n’était pas issue d’un milieu forcément propice.
Après avoir touché son rêve du doigt, sa colère est bien légitime. Conductrice quatre ans et du jour au lendemain, la voilà priée de retourner au service de son mari. Un mari qui boit pour oublier les horreurs et blessures de la guerre et que la guerre a rendu méchant, violent et visiblement plus macho qu’il ne l’était. Mais qu’importe l’avis de son mari, Agnès est bien décidée à se battre pour plus de droits.

Ce roman est paru dans la collection « Les héroïques » des éditions Talents Hauts.
Les Héroïques, ce sont les femmes, au premier chef, mais aussi les enfants, les personnes handicapées, les immigrés, les colonisés… Ceux qui n’ont pas voix au chapitre dans les manuels d’histoire, dont on ne parle pas dans les médias, mais sans qui le monde ne serait pas ce qu’il est. Ce pourraient être nos grands-parents, nos parents. Ce pourrait être chacun d’entre nous.
